The crew of the abandoned oil products tanker Iba (IMO 9438200) were set to fly home to their families after four years stranded off Dubai. The vessel beached on the coast of Umm Al Quwain, UAE in late January. The tanker was understood to have broken off its anchor or anchors and subsequently drifted aground in strong winds. Previously it had sat anchored off the UAE coast since 2017 after the owners Alco Shipping were hit by financial problems. The ship was finally sold in March. This meant that the crew could be paid 80% of what they were owed, amounting to about $170,000. The five crew members – three from India, one from Pakistan and another from Myanmar – were scheduled to return home on flights that will leave Dubai. The men will receive a health check once they end their contracts. The new owners took weeks to recover the vessel and refloat it, and it then spent several more weeks at anchorage while the crew’s paperwork was completed. On May 9th the tanker berthed in Dubai, where as of May 11th it remained.
2008-built, Panama-flagged, 5,034 gt Iba is still recorded on Equasis as owned and managed by Alco Shipping Services of Sharjah, UAE. No details on new owners.
