Marine accident round-up : 13th December 2018

A pilot and two crew members of a speedboat of pilot vessel Wandelaar (IMO 9569011) landed in the sea before dawn on December 10th. They were rescued from the water by their colleagues, and transported by helicopter to the AZ Sint-Jan hospital in Bruges. The Sirius along with several other ships was on the spot in an attempt to save the capsized speedboat. 2012-built, Belgium-flagged, 2,462 gt Wandelaar is owned by Wandelaar Invest SA care of manager VLOOT dab of Ostend, Belgium.

Luxury yacht Encore (IMO 9664718) collided with a Tauranga pier on December 8th after a miscalculation of tidal flow. The incident took place while the yacht was in Tauranga being painted at the new marine precinct. Vessel Works had hoisted the luxury yacht back into the water on December 6th. The vessel then remained in the travel-lift berth for several days while equipment was loaded. While trying to depart, the vessel collided with a wooden pile at the end of Bridge Wharf, damaging the ship. Late on December 8th the ship left the port and headed for Auckland, where she berthed on the morning of December 9th. 2013-built, Cook Islands-flagged, 258 gt Encore is owned and managed by Eclipse Marine Ltd of the Marshall Islands.

After a fire in her engine room on August 2nd, cargo ship Volcan de Teneguía (IMO 9335161) remains under repair at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It has become necessary to replace all the wiring of the ship, plus other equipment that was damaged by the fire. 2007-built, Spain-flagged, 11,197 gt Volcan de Teneguia is owned and managed by Caflaja SL of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. It is entered with Britannia Club on behalf of Caflaja SL.

Cargo ship Rui Xing Lun (MMSI:413270840 ) ran aground and broke in two in the afternoon of December 8th in the Bohai Sea in northern China, northwest of Weifang in the Shandong Province. The stern section sank quickly Of the 10 crew members, nine were rescued from the wheelhouse, which protruded from the water, while one was recovered dead. An oil leakage was contained by booms.

Fishing vessel Dirkje-TH 102 (IMO 9001887) caught fire in the engine room nine miles off Goeree during the evening of December 11th. Several ships came to assist and the four crew members were brought ashore safely. The Dirkje was taken in tow by a KNRM lifeboat from Hoek van Holland and pulled to the port of Stellendam. The Goeree fire brigade quickly extinguished the fire.

Cement carrier Västanvik (IMO 6600618) suffered trouble during a transit of the Kiel Canal on December 7th while en route from Aalborg to France. She had left the locks in Kiel at around midnight, but a short time later she veered off course and touched both the north and south embankment of the Kiel Canal, just east of the ferry station Sehestedt. The ship was then moored at the pilings. Two tugs pulled her to the communal port Rendsburg where she berthed on December 8th. She was still there on December 12th. 1966-built, Sweden-flagged, 2,256 gt Vastanvik is owned by Vastanvik Shipping Ltd care of manager Eureka Shipping Ltd of Limassol, Cyprus. ISM manager is SMT Cement SP Z OO of Sopot, Poland. It is entered with Standard Club (European Division) on behalf of Vestanvik Shipping Ltd, and with Hydor on behalf of Aalborg Portland.
