Marine accident round-up : 12th April 2019

During offloading operations at the Valongo Container Terminal in Santos RoRo cargo ship Grande San Paolo (IMO 9253208) suffered a fire. Damage to the ship remained limited. Italy-flagged, 56,738 gt Grande San Paolo is owned and ISM managed by Grimaldi Deep Sea ASpA of Naples, Italy. Commercial manager is Grimaldi Group SpA of the same address. It is entered with North of England Club on behalf of Grimaldi Deep Sea SpA.

General cargo ship BBC Nile (IMO 9571375) suffered a main engine failure in the South Atlantic en route from Rio de Janeiro at around dawn on April 4th. The owners of the vessel requested tug assistance. The vessel was berthed at the repair wharf in the port of Cape Town during the evening of April 8th. 2011-built, Antigua & Barbuda-flagged, 12,980 gt BBC Nile is owned by Osterbur care of manager Briese Heavylift GmbH & Co KG of Leer (Ostfriesland), Germany. It is entered with Swedish Club (Gothenburg Team) on behalf of Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co KG MS “Osterbur”.

General cargo ship BBC Amethyst (IMO 9504724) allided with a lock of the Kiel Canal in Kiel-Holtenau during the morning of April 7th while en route from Norrköping to Rotterdam. The ship was about to enter the large Northern lock but the speed was too high and the angle too steep, causing the port side to hit the roof of the control centre, damaging it along a length of about five metres, at an estimated cost of tens of thousands of euros. Part of the quay and the fender pontoons inside the lock also suffered damage. Two people inside the centre escaped unharmed. The police launched an investigation against the 51 year old pilot.
