Marine accident round-up : 11th October 2022

Oil products tanker Smooth Sea 18 (IMO 8684888) lost control in Chao Phraya river in Samut Prakan, Bangkok during the early evening of October 8th, while proceeding upstream in full load to an oil terminal. The tanker reportedly strayed off course after it had to pass clear of a tug that was towing barges downstream. To avoid grounding the tanker had to drop anchor and reverse engine to full astern. It managed to stop, but only metres short of the embankment and a riverside restaurant, causing diners considerable concern. The tanker later safely reached its destination. After offloading the cargo it left Bangkok, bound for Sri Racha, Chonburi. As of October 10th the vessel was at Sri Racha anchorage, Thailand.

2014-built, Thailand-flagged, 5,169 gt Smooth Sea 18 is owned and managed by Smooth sea Co Ltd of Bangkok, Thailand. It is entered with Shipowners’ Club on behalf of Smooth Sea Co Ltd.

Offshore support vessel Nor Goliath (IMO 9396933) came into contact with recently launched offshore processing ship (FPSO) KG D6 Ruby (IMO 9884930) at Kakinada Anchorage, Bay of Bengal, India, some time last week, causing damage to the Nor Goliath’s gangway and to the KG D6 Ruby’s staircases. The Nor Goliath gangway broke in two, with one part collapsing into the water. Contact was caused by rough weather and high seas, and nobody was injured. The KG D6 Ruby is to be deployed in a deep-water MJ gas condensate development project. The KG D6 Ruby arrived at Kokinada last month from Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea. The accident was said to be likely to cause a two-week delay in project scheduled works.

2009-built, Marshall Islands-flagged, 25,812 gt Nor Goliath is owned by Goliath Offshore Holdings Pte care of manager Coastline Maritime Pte Ltd of Singapore. ISM manager is V Ships Offshore Ltd of Aberdeen, UK. It is entered with Gard P&I on behalf of Goliath Offshore Holdings Ltd. Claims leader for Hull is Gard As on behalf of V Ships PLC (Alvada Section). No AIS since September 29th when the vessel was at Kakinada anchorage, Indonesia.

2022-built, India-flagged, 117,860 gt KG D6 Ruby is owned and managed by Reliance Industries Ltd of Mumbai, India. ISM manager is Ocean Continental shipping of Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is entered with Gard AS on behalf of Reliance Industries Ltd. NO AIS since September 13th, when the vessel was at Kakinada anchorage, Indonesia.

A fire erupted in the engine room of offshore supply tug Aegean Star (IMO 8401432) at Alexandroupolis Port, northeast Greece, Aegean sea, during the morning of October 6th. Two fire engines and two tugs were deployed in fire fighting. No further details. No AIS since October 5th, when vessel was “stopped” at Alexandroupolis.

1984-built, Greece-flagged, 1,823 gt Aegean Star is owned and managed by Laki Star Maritime Co of Alexandroupolis, Greece.

Bulk carrier Ale (IMO 9521825) was reported to have either touched bottom or run aground in Long Pond, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, on September 14th. The ship was refloated and anchored, but was apparently damaged. On October 4th it was taken by two tugs (the Atlantic Fir and Atlantic Larch) to Les Mechins Canada, ETA October 10th. While at anchor it was fenced off with booms in the stern area as a light oil sheen was observed. As of October 10th it was reported as Not Under Command, just off Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, northern New Brunswick, between the Gulf of St Lawrence and Quebec.

2012-built, Singapore-flagged, 13,579 gt Ale is owned by Oslo Venture Pte Ltd care of Bulkship Management AS of Oslo, Norway. It is entered with Gard P&I on behalf of Oslo ventures Pte Ltd. Gars is claims leader for Hull and Loss of Hire on behalf of Bulkship management AS.

Container ship Skalar (IMO 9458975) suffered an electrical failure on October 5th shortly after unmooring, less than a mile from container terminal Vuosaari, Helsinki. The ship was disabled in the exit fairway and was apparently anchored until a tug or tugs responded. The Skalar was subsequently towed back to port and berthed. The ship initially, is bound for Bremerhaven. As of October 10th the vessel was moored at Vuosaari, Finland.

2012-built, Portugal-flagged, 10,585 gt Skalar is owned by Skalar Redderei Rambow care of manager Rambow Bereederungs GmbH of Drochtersen, Germany. It is entered with Skuld (Skuld Hamburg) on behalf of Rambow Bereederungs GmbH 7 Co KG.
