Marine accident round-up : 10th September 2021

Bulk carrier Johnny Cash (IMO 9386421) suffered an engine failure during the morning of September 1st at the 151.5km mark in the Suez Canal while proceeding in a northbound convoy. it was towed back to Suez anchorage and anchored the same day. The ship was en route from Saudi Arabia to Constanta Romania. As of September 9th the vessel was in the Black Sea, en route to Constanta.

2007-built, Marshall Islands-flagged, 40,198 gt Johnny Cash is owned by Alpha Seatrading SA care of manager Dexter Navigation Ltd of Piraeus, Greece.

General cargo ship Tan Binh 45 (IMO 9140229) was arrested on September 1st in a litigation case on the  orders of the local High Court, at the port of Chittagong, Bangladesh. As of September 9th the vessel was at anchorage in Chittagong.

1996-built, Panama-flagged, 15,500 gt Tan Binh 45 is owned and managed by Tan Binh Co Ltd of Haiphong City, Vietnam. It is entered with West of England (Claims Team Hong Kong) on behalf of Tan Binh Co Ltd.

Bulk carrier Athenian Phoenix (IMO 9451616) was intercepted and detained by a Libyan National Army (LNA) patrol vessel in position when 21nm northwest of Ras El Hilal on August 4th. The vessel was detained for breaching the LNA ‘No Sail Zone’ and was escorted to the Ras el Hilal anchorage for administrative procedures. It had been  proceeding from the Suez Canal to Misurata, Libya. As of September 9th it was moored off Misurata.

2009-built, Panama-flagged, 93,050 gt Athenian Phoenix is owned by Athenian Phoenix Enterprises care of Astron Ship Management SA of Piraeus, Greece. ISM manager is V Ships UK Ltd of Glasgow, UK. It is entered with Gard on behalf of Athenian Phoenix Enterprises SA. It is entered for H&M with Gard AS (claims leader) on behalf of Phoenix Energy Navigation.

Two crew members of cargo ship Sally (IMO 9841213) were taken to hotel quarantine after refusing to sail out of the Port of Portland, Australia, on the night of September 2nd. A Department of Health spokesperson said the vessel, which was loaded with woodchips, was berthed at Portland. The vessel had arrived on August 30th but its departure was delayed when the two Chinese crew members requested they be taken off the ship. It finally left the port on September 3rd and on September 7th was underway to an unknown destination.

2020-built, Liberia-flagged, 52,938 gt Sally is owned by Great Hope Ltd care of pacific Rim Shipmanagement of Singapore. It is entered with Swedish Club (Asia team) on behalf of Great Hope Ltd..

Bunkering tanker Julvinda (IMO 9755878) suffered a fire on the starboard bow while in the waters of Gorontalo City, Indonesia  on September 6th after transporting fuel oil  to the port to the Pertamina Depot in Tenda Village, Hulonthalangi District. The ship had left the Pertamina Depot at around 16:40 after unloading fuel. At about 18:15 a fire broke out, but was quickly extinguished by the crew. One crew member was reported to have suffered severe burns.

2014-built, Indonesia-flagged, 2,876 gt Julvinda is owned and managed by Mitha Samudera Wijaya Pt of Medan, Indonesia.

General cargo ship FG Levent (IMO 9173446) arrived at Tuzla anchorage, Turkey and entered a shipyard on September 5th. A detailed damage survey was carried out by the class surveyor together with the owner’s superintendent and shipyard engineers. Subsequently, permanent repairs have commenced by the technical team with regards to the class surveyor’s further recommendations.
