Marine accident round-up : 27th November 2017

A mechanical problem with a crane in Sydney delayed the arrival of the containership Olga Maersk (IMO 9251614), which had left Auckland from New Zealand on November 21st. She headed first to Melbourne to minimize any delay. The delay of the Sydney call meant that the ship’s containers were not handled at the DP World Australia’s Sydney Terminal on Nov 24, where the ship should have berthed. 2003-built, Denmark-flagged, 34,202 gt Olga Maersk is owned and managed by Maersk Line AS of Copenhagen, Denmark. Cruise ship Silver Cloud (IMO 8903923) suffered an engine failure on November 19th as a result of a faulty pump while en route from Buenos Aires to Antarctica. It was her first trip after a significant refit, during which she was converted into a polar cruise ship. She left Buenos Aires on November 16th and was off Puerto Madryn when the pump failed. She headed for Puerto Madryn under own power, where she remained berthed on November 25th. 1994-built, Bahamas-flagged, 16,927 gt Silver Cloud is owned by Silver Cloud Shipping Co care of manager Silversea Cruises Ltd of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. ISM manager is Silversea Sam of Monte Carlo, Monaco. It is entered with Skuld on behalf of Silversea Cruises Ltd.

Brunsbüttel police officers detected a significant overload on November 19th in general cargo ship NS Holland (IMO 9142526), which had just transited the Kiel Canal westbound, en route from Helsingborg to Greece. The draught exceeded the allowed mark by 20 centimetres, equating to a 167 tons overload of fertilizer. NS Holland was detained in Brunsbüttel. It was still at anchor on November 23rd. 1996-built, Moldova-flagged, 1,682 gt NS Holland is owned and managed by NS Holland Shipholding Ltd of the Marshall Islands.

Chemical oil products tanker Aragonith (IMO 9164081) suffered an engine failure on the afternoon of November 22nd during a transit of the Kiel Canal from Rotterdam to Gdynial. The ship proceeded to the siding at Breiholz, finally reaching Kiel early on November 23rd. 1999-built, Cyprus-flagged, 3,218 gt Aragonith is owned by Lake View Shipping Co ltd care of manager Unibaltic Shipping Ltd, Szczecin, Poland. It is entered with Shipowner’s P&I Club on behalf of Unibaltic Ltd.
