Marine accident round-up : 25th October 2017

Six crew members, including the captain, were kidnapped from 3,104 teu panamax containership Demeter (IMO 9298636) on October 21st while the ship was about 50nm miles south-west of Bonny, Nigeria. Eight armed pirates boarded the vessel after an exchange of fire. An attack the day before had been conducted by the same group when it tried but failed to board a supply vessel. The vessel has been escorted to safe anchorage. 2005-built, Liberia-flagged, 35,881 gt Demeter is owned by Puerto Varas Shipping Co care of manager Peter Doehle Schiffahrts-KG of Hamburg, Germany. It is entered with Standard Club on behalf of Puerto Varas Shipping Company Limited.

The Government of Canada has awarded a contract for the dismantling of general cargo ship Kathryn Spirit (IMO 6717069) and removing the ship from the shores of Beauharnois, Quebec, to a joint venture of Excavation René St-Pierre inc. and Englobe Corp. The C$11.1m contract with company Kathryn Spirit DJV includes the complete dismantling of the vessel, the removal of the temporary embankment built earlier this year and the restoration of the site to its original condition. The schedule of work includes the dismantling of the vessel by the autumn of 2018, the removal of the kofferdam for the winter of 2018-2019 and the restoration of the site for the autumn of 2019. 1967-built, Canada-flagged, 9,261 gt Kathryn Spirit is owned and managed by McKeil Marine Ltd of Ontario, Canada.

Indian fishing boat Emmanuvel was hit by an unidentified merchant ship in a “hit and run” during the night of October 11th, about 45 miles off the Beypore coast in the Arabian sea. The half-sunk wreck remained afloat, but only two of the six crew members were rescued. The owner was found dead and three remain missing. Containership Hyundai Global (IMO 9393022) was detained upon its arrival at Mumbai anchorage on October 16th on suspicion of having been involved. 2009-built, UK-flagged, 94,511 gt Hyundai Global is owned by Aprel Shipping Inc care of manager Zodiac Maritime Ltd of London, UK. It is entered with Steamship Mutual (Smuab) (Americas Syndicate) on behalf of Aprel Shipping Inc.

Bulk carrier Harvest Sky (IMO 9667332) was refloated at full tide on the evening of October 20th by contracted salvage tug Koyo Maru (IMO: 9162148). No leaks were reported. The following day Harvest Sky was under tow moving south along the Taiwanese coast towards safe waters, where a thorough survey would take place. The ship became stuck about 500 metres off the coast after its main and steering engines malfunctioned. None of the 21 crew members was hurt. The cargo ship owner has been fined NT$800,000 (US$26,500) for violating Commercial Port Law. 2013-built, Panama-flagged, 50,626 gt Harvest Sky is owned by Ansei Shipholding SA care of manager First Marine Service Co Ltd of Tokyo, Japan.

Multi-purpose carrier Maks (IMO 8017011) allided with the lower gate of the Svirstroy lock on the Svir river on October 19th while it was underway from Petrozavodsk to St. Petersburg after repairs, apparently caused by a failure of the vessel’s control system. The vessel suffered little damage but the lock’s gate was torn. Maks berthed near the accident site for investigations. 1980-built, Belize-flagged, 1,084 gt Maks is owned and managed by Quantrill Estate Inc of the British Virgin Islands.
