Marine accident round-up : 25th June 2017

Bulk carrier Rainbow Harmony (IMO 9558737) suffered engine failure on June 16th in the South Atlantic while en route from Panjang to Amsterdam . A tug was sent to assist and on June 23rd the bulk carrier was taken in tow towards Walvis Bay. 2009built, 22,456 gt Rainbow Harmony is owned by Panama-based Fanari Maritime and managed by Ritelane Marine of Athens, Greece. It is entered with Swedish Club on behalf of Fanari Maritime. Bulk carrier Ocean Phoenix (IMO 9175638) started to drift on Chittagong’s outer anchorage on June 24th after her anchor dragged. It could not heave up anchor because the rudder or propeller became entangled in the anchor chain. The bulk carrier then allided with the stern of the anchored Green Phoenix (IMO 9547001). Both vessels were loaded with clinker. Ocean Phoenix suffered a breach of the hull on the starboard side in cargo hold no.4 and subsequent water ingress. The hold flooded and the vessel’s aft came to rest on the bottom. Salvors are sealing the leak so they can dewater the flooded hold. Green Phoenix lost an anchor in the incident. 1997-built, 27,011 gt Ocean Phoenix is owned by Ocean Phoenix PTE of Jakarta, Indonesia, and managed by Bogasari Flour Mills Indofood of the same city. It is entered with Japan P&I Club on behalf of Sanzo Enterprise (Panama) SA. RoRo ferry Veteran (IMO 9736901)has been taken to drydock in St. John’s Newfoundland after ice damage to its hull. Repairs will take approximately another two weeks and the repair was expected to cost $350,000. 2015-built, 4,459 gt Veteran is owned and managed by The Province of Newfoundland & Labrador of Lewisporte, Newfoundland. It is entered with Shipowners’ P&I Club on behalf of The Province of Newfoundland And Labrador. A broken engine caused black smoke to emerge from RoRo cargo ship Ciudad de Ibiza (IMO 9263370) on June 22nd while the vessel was off the coast of Sant Joan in Portinatx. The ship en route from Ibiza to Valencia, berthed safely at the TCV Terminal at 9.50 p.m. with its remaining engine. 2003-built, 16,686 gt Ciudad de Ibiza is owned by Maritime Global Operator Ltd of Portoroz, Slovenia, and managed by Acciona Transmediterranea. Spanish report A fire broke out in a cargo hold of bulk carrier Global Laguna (IMO 9626730) on June 22nd while it was docked at the jetty in Dörtyol near Iskenderun on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. It was offloading a cargo 45,000 tons of scrap. 2012-built, 33,239 gt Global Laguna is owned by Panama’s Global Jewelry SA and is managed by NYK Line of Tokyo, Japan.
