Marine accident round up : 16th May 2018

Crude oil tanker Tofteviken (IMO 9285847) was in collision with 84ft-fishing vessel Polaris nearly 30 miles southeast of Bridgehampton, New York during the evening of May 12th. Tofteviken, in load at the time, was en route from Philadelphia to New York. The Polaris was sailing back to its homeport in Massachusetts after a night of fishing. The fishing vessel suffered damage to its bow and outrigger, but none of the seven crew was reported injured and she was able to return to its homeport safely. Tofteviken, meanwhile, suffered a roughly 30ft gash along its portside hull. Once again no injuries were reported. The tanker dropped anchor off New York for investigation by the US Coast Guard of New York. 2005-built, Bahamas-flagged, 62,806 gt Tofteviken is owned by Tofteviken LLC care of Taurus Tankers Ltd of London, UK. Commercial manager is Viken Shipping AS of Ovre Ervik, Norway, while ISM manager is Wallem Shipmanagement Ltd of Hong Kong. Container ship Navios Lapis (IMO 9431680) suffered an engine room fire, when coming from Durban, before arriving at Cape Town under its own power on May 9th. The vessel then underwent inspection at the Jackson Wharf to establish the extent of damage to the generator. As of afternoon of May 15th, she was still moored at Cape Town. 2009 built, Marshall Islands flagged, 40,542 gt Navios Lapis is owned by Theros Ventures Ltd, care of manager Navios Shipmanagement Inc of Piraeus, Athens, Greece. ISM manager is Rickmers Shipmanagement of Singapore. It is entered with London P&I Club on behalf of Thereos ventures Ltd.

Cargo ship Frankfurt Express (IMO 9450442) suffered problems while manoeuvring in the port of Damietta after suffering an engine failure during her departure after completing cargo operations on May 12th. The ship was disabled and the port was blocked . She was taken in tow by port tugs and, after the crew fixed the problem, the vessel resumed her voyage, bound for Barcelona. 2010 built, Germany flagged, 93,750 gt Frankfurt Express is owned by Xiang L22 Ireland Intl care of manager Hapag Lloyd of Hamburg, Germany. It is entered with Britannia on behalf of Xiang L22 Ireland International Ship Lease Co Ltd.

Cargo ship Marietje Nora (IMO 9481609) became disabled in the Ionian Sea on May 12th while en route from Frederikshaven to Ravenna. The ship was towed to Corfu and  berthed, where she remained as of the afternoon of May 15th. 2015 built, Netherlands flagged, 5,904 gt Marietje Nora is owned by Wagenborg Delfzjil BV care of manager Wagenborg Shipping of Delfzjil, Netherlands. ISM manager is Ven Gent MA CV of Delfzjil, Netherlands. It is entered with North of England Club on behalf of Noord Nederlandsche P&I Club.
