Marine accident round-up : 15th May 2018

Container ship Sinokor Qingdao (IMO 9160906) suffered a fire on board in the South China Sea during the evening of May 8th, while en route from Gwangyang to Hong Kong, with 18 crew members on board, ETA May 11th. Chinese rescue authorities coordinated the incident response and sent rescue vessels and helicopters to the scene. The fire was extinguished within a couple of hours and the ship anchored off Hong Kong early on May 11th. 1999 built, South Korea flagged, 9,030 gt Sinokor Qingdao is owned by Sinokor Qingdao SA care of manager Sinokor Merchant Marine Co Ltd of Seoul, South Korea. It is entered with Standard Club (Standard Asia Division) on behalf of Sinokor Merchant Marine Co Ltd.

Two crew members of general cargo ship Atlantic Harmony (IMO 9613812) died on board of the bulk carrier, with the death of a third person currently unconfirmed. The ship called at the island of Capo Verde off Northwest Africa on May 7th while en route from Tubarao, Brazil to Gibraltar. On May 9th she left Praia, Cape Verde, but on May 8th turned back and anchored again at Praia on May 9th after a fatal accident. The men were believed to have died from poisoning. All three victims were Ukrainians. 2017 built, Hong Kong flagged, 22,362 gt Atlantic Harmony is owned by Digital Epoch Ltd care of manager Istanbul Denizcilik ve Deniz Tasimaciligi AS of

Istanbul, Turkey. It is entered with West of England Club (Claims Team 1) on behalf of Digital Epoch Ltd.

A fire broke out in several containers on the aft cargo deck of container ship SITC Osaka (IMO 9638329), which had been berthed at the container terminal of Rokko island, Kobe, Japan, since May 4th. All crew members were evacuated, and firefighting continued. It was not clear if the fire was related to an earlier event when the container ship was hit by NYK Venus (IMO 9312793)

During the morning of May 4th NYK Venus had allided with SITC Osaka in Kobe, having just departed from Kobe for Singapore. SITC Osaka was scheduled to depart on May 8th. On May 9th she was still berthed at the Maersk Sealand Container Terminal in Kobe, but she appears to have sailed on May 10th.
