MAIB issues assessment of vessel grounding

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has initiated a preliminary assessment into the grounding on October 1st of the Genesis (A19) a 30-meter UK-registered longliner fishing vessel.

The vessel ran aground on the Old Man of Hoy, located west of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. All 17 crew members were airlifted safely off the deck by HM Coastguard. No injuries were reported. HM Coastguard’s Counter Pollution team reported no current signs of oil pollution or associated debris.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said that “just after 06:30 on 1 October, HM Coastguard received a report that a fishing vessel with 17 people on board had gone aground at the Old Man of Hoy, Orkney Islands and was in need of immediate assistance”.

Monitoring remained active.

The MAIB formally logged the case for a preliminary assessment on Friday October 2nd to evaluate the causes of the grounding and determine if a full, formal accident investigation will be required.

Salvage plans for the vessel were currently underway, according to reports.
