Kaami refloated by Resolve Marine

Florida-based Resolve Marine said that it had refloated grounded cargo vessel Kaami (IMO 9063885), towing her to dry dock in Loch Kishorn Scotland, despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kaami ran aground early on March 23rd about six miles north-west of the Isle of Skye on the Eugenie Rock (IMN, March 26th 2020). The Russian crewmembers were rescued by the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter. They were flown to Stornoway on Lewis and were safe and well. The Kaami had sailed from Drogheda on March 21st and was bound for Slite, Gotland, Sweden with 1,900 tons of SRF (Solid Refuse-derived Fuel) pellets on board.

What followed evolved into a comprehensive response operation requiring patching of raptured cargo holds and ballast tanks, lightering of the cargo, and refloat operations.

Despite unpredictable weather conditions off the Isle of Skye, Scotland, and difficult conditions associated with the Covid-19 restrictions, Resolve mobilized salvage teams and equipment, from bases in Europe, Africa, and the US.

A Lloyd’s Open Form was agreed between Resolve Marine and the vessel’s owners.

Storms prevented Resolve’s salvage team from boarding the vessel immediately, but on March 25th the response teams were able to board via helicopter and begin an on-site assessment.

Working closely with the UK Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP), MCA, and the owner’s Special Casualty Representative (SCR), a salvage plan was developed to mitigate pollution threats, stabilize the vessel and prepare her for refloating.

The team’s immediate priority was to remove the vessel’s bunkers, containing some 63 tonnes of fuel. Once the fuels were removed, the team’s attention turned to removing the 1,900 tons of SRF pellets cargo which Resolve said posed a significant environmental threat.

1994-built, Bahamas-flagged, 2,715 gt Kaami is owned by Misje Bulk AS care of Misje Rederi AS of Bergen, Norway. It is entered with Gard P&I (Bermuda) on behalf of Misje Bulk AS. It is entered for H&M and Loss Of Hire with Gard AS as claims leader.
