ITF launches online index naming companies that mistreat seafarers

An online index has been launched by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) which it said aimed to tackle the exploitation and abuse of workers at sea.

The online offering, called the Seafarers’ Breach of Rights Index, “names and shames” companies that have been accused of failures in repatriation, non-payment of wages, and failures to maintain crew needs, together and individually constituting “abandonment”.

ITF gave to the press the names of six companies, registered in the UAE, India, Marshall Islands, and Iran as the country of control of one company, that are accused of abandonment of seafarers.
