ITF aiding repatriation of sailors stranded at Tilbury and Bristol

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) is aiding the repatriation of crew who are currently on six of Global Cruise Lines’ ships. The vessels are currently docked at Tilbury London and Bristol Avonmouth in the UK. The ITF and Global Cruise Lines came to an agreement to ensure that the crew members were repatriated in the next few days. CMV-Cruise and Maritime Voyages ships Astoria (IMO 5383304), Astor (IMO 8506373), Columbus (IMO 8611398) and Vasco da Gama (IMO 8919245) are at Tilbury, UK, while CMV Marco Polo (IMO 6417097) is docked at Bristol. In June the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) detained five ships over crew welfare concerns (IMN June 22nd 2020) .The seafarers were stuck on the vessels because of the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic. The MCA surveyors discovered a number of expired and invalid Seafarer’s Employment Agreements, late payment of wages, and crew who had been onboard for more than 12 months.

Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV), which employs about 4,000 people, has been in talks with lenders and other creditors about a rescue deal (IMN, June 23rd 2020)
