Iran – New guidance from US authorities; sunken Sanchi included in sanctions list

On Monday November 5th the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) took a number of actions in connection with the Monday implementation of full re-imposition of sanctions on Iran. OFAC’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), relating to the end of the 180-day wind-down period and the re-imposition of US sanctions lifted or waived in connection with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was updated, specifically FAQs 256 and 417. Outdated FAQs were archived.

More than 700 persons were designated or identified and added to the SDN List, including persons that had been removed from the SDN List in connection with the JCPOA.

Unfortunately for OFAC, it also listed Iranian tanker Sanchi (IMO 9356608), which sank in the East China Sea on January 14th this year after colliding with CF Crystal on January 6th, claiming the lives of all 32 crew.

The crude oil tanker was listed by the US under all of its previous names – Gardenia, Seahorse and Sepid – because of its links with Iran’s national tanker company.
