High-speed ferry collides with fishing boat off Hong Kong

High-speed ferry Universal MK-2003 has collided with a fishing boat near Lantau, Hong Kong. According to initial information the collision was a result of poor visibility in bad weather .The vessel was returning from Macao with 289 passengers and 10 crew when her route was crossed by a fishing ship which was reportedly not well-marked. Despite a last-minute attempt to avoid a collision, Universal MK-2003 hit the fishing ship with her port board and suffered a large breach above the water line. One woman was slightly injured during the collision.

After two hours’ detention and inspection Universal MK-2003 was released to resume her voyage and safely arrived at Macau Ferry Pier. No water pollution resulted from the accident.

Universal MK-2003 has an overall length of 29.00 metres and 267 GRT. It was built in 1975 by Boeing Marine Systems.
