Dozens of superyachts, motorboats and sailboats were heavily damaged or sunk during a violent storm in Rapallo, east of Genoa on the Ligurian coast, on October 30th. The dam of the marina Carlo Riva was flooded.
The 37.8-metre Custom Line Suegno, Silvio Berlusconi’s yacht, was among the many luxury boats damaged and was semi-submerged. Other superyachts badly damaged were the Codecasa SpA Italy-flagged 2005-built 34.6m 199 gt Maria Carla (listed as owned by Fraser Yachts), the 1961-built UK-flagged 35.25m 178 gt Eutopia (IMO 8985892) and Italy-flagged 2005-built 193 gt motor yacht Darling Boys. About half the 390 vessels in the marina were damaged.
The breakwater had been reinforced in 2000 after a similar storm, but did not prove up to the task required on Tuesday. The damage to the port was estimated to be at least several million Euros. The town of Santa Margharita and the luxury resort of Portofino were also hit by the storm.
Meanwhile, cruise ship Celebrity Constellation (IMO 9192399) broke free from her moorings due to bad weather during the afternoon of October 29th while docked at the port of La Spezia, Italy. Operator Celebrity Cruises said that the vessel quickly implemented safety protocols and manoeuvred within the harbour basin and dropped anchor until the inclement weather passed.
Cruise ship Costa Magica (IMO 9239795) was moored next to the Celebrity Constellation. As the strong winds pushed the latter around, her aft hit the bow of the Costa ship. No injuries have been reported. Local tug boats brought Celebrity Constellation under control, returning the vessel to the pier and moored with no major damage. No major damage reported to Costa Magica.
