Explosion reported at Freeport LNG facility in Texas

An explosion was reported to have occurred at the Freeport LNG export facility near Freeport, Texas, which closed a section of the Intracoastal Waterway to marine traffic, the US Coast Guard said on Wednesday, June 8th.

No injuries were reported and there appeared to be no immediate threat to local communities. The explosion occurred for unknown reasons at about 11:40 local time at the Freeport LNG plant on Quintana Island.

The USCG quickly enforced a two-mile security zone east and west of the facility on the Intracoastal Waterway, which has since been lifted.

The facility operates three LNG trains capable of producing approximately 15m tonnes per year of LNG, most of it contracted for supply to Japan.
