Explosion on product tanker Weichselstern badly burns two engineers

An explosion in the engine room of product tanker Weichselstern badly burned two crew engineers. The vessel was anchored at Neue Weser, north of Wilhelmshaven in Germany. Fuel fumes exploded into the engine compartment during routine maintenance, causing severe burns to the second and third engineers, who were taken to a hospital in Hamburg for medical treatment. The fire from the explosion was quickly extinguished by the rest of the crew, but Weichselstern suffered serious damage and remains anchored in North Sea. There was no water pollution or oil leaks. Weichselstern is 21,852 DWT with 14,400 GRT. It was built in 1999. The owner and operator is Germany-based TB Marine Shipmanagement.
