During the sustained period of surveillance after the piracy attack against the KSL Sydney (IMO 9683269), on October 16th about 340 miles off Somalia, EU NAVFOR (Operation Atalanta) said that it had destroyed a whaler on October 28th.
EU NAVFOR Force Commander Rear Admiral Alfonso Perez de Nanclares had ordered counter-piracy forces into the area. An EU NAVFOR Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) flew over the area to gain detailed information on suspected pirate activity. Information from the MPRA made it apparent that pirates were active in the area on whaling vessels. The suspicious whaler identified by the MPRA was later tracked by the crew of ESPS Castilla to a small bay just off the Somali coast. The Force Commander ordered it to be seized and towed out to sea, where the vessel was blown up.
On Tuesday October 16th pirates approached and opened fire at MV KSL Sydney 340nm off Somalia. Armed security guards on board the ship acted quickly to foil the attack.
