Cruise ship lists in strong winds, passengers injured

Cruise ship Norwegian Escape (IMO 9677076)heeled over during strong winds on Sunday March 3rd of the US eastern seaboard after her departure from New York, causing cosmetic damage to the interior and injuring several passengers.

Norwegian said that “just before midnight on Sunday, March 3, Norwegian Escape encountered unexpected weather in the form of a sudden, extreme gust of wind, estimated at 100 knots, which resulted in the ship heeling to the port side. Several injuries were reported and those guests and crew received immediate attention or are being treated by the ship’s medical staff. There was no damage to the ship; she remains fully operational and continues her scheduled itinerary.”

Weather forecasts had predicted rough weather. Norwegian Escape arrived at Port Canaveral, Florida on March 4th, where several ambulances were waiting to attend to the injured. She then departed as scheduled for her normal itinerary.

2015-built, Bahamas-flagged, 165,157 gt Norwegian Escape is owned by Breakaway Three Ltd care of manager NCL Bahamas Ltd of Miami, Florida, USA. It is entered with Steamship Mutual (Smuab) Americas Syndicate, on behalf of Breakaway Three Ltd.
