Covid-19 infects 214 on the five cruise ships being monitored in Brazilian waters

Five cruise ships in Brazilian waters that are being monitored by the country’s health agency Anvisa have now seen 214 reported cases.

Two of the ships are in quarantine in the port of Santos

Two ships run by MSC Cruises, each with more than 3,000 passengers were due to arrive in Rio de Janeiro and Santos this week, Anvisa said.

The MSC Seaside (IMO 9745366) is scheduled to arrive in Santos today (January 6th). It has reported 65 cases among crew members and 25 among passengers. The MSC Preziosa (IMO 9595321) arrived in Rio on Wednesday with 25 crew and eight passengers infected with the virus, Anvisa said.

Cruise ship companies have now suspended operations in Brazil until January 21st after Anvisa recommended against cruise ship travel following several offshore outbreaks of Covid-19.

US-based Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said that no ships would be casting off during the voluntary suspension period. Those at sea would complete their voyages.

“During this pause, CLIA is working on behalf of the cruise companies that operate in the country – MSC Cruzeiros and Costa Cruzeiros – to look for points of alignment with the federal government, Anvisa, states and municipalities,” the association said.

CLIA made its announcement after Brazilian federal, state and municipal officials met with representatives of the tourism industry about the issue.

MSC Splendida (IMO 9359806) and Costa Diadema (IMO 9636888) are already quarantined at anchor in Santos. They had 62 and 30 crew members infected, respectively, with no passengers on board.

Costa Fascinosa (IMO 9479864) is at port in Rio with seven cases of COVID-19, five of them passengers, according to Anvisa.
