Contaminated fuel warning for Hong Kong

Britannia Club has informed members that in the past week the Lloyds Registry fuel analysis service (FOBAS) had warned that bunker fuel oils in Hong Kong had been found to contain components not normally present in marine fuels.

After analysis, some fuel was found to contain evidence of fatty acids, various monoglycerides and other oxygenated compounds. This contravened the Revised MARPOL Annex VI regulation 18.3 and the International Marine Fuel Standard ISO 8217, Clause 5.

As the only way to identify the contamination prior to use was through a laboratory analysis, sufficient samples should be taken and analyzed before the fuel is used and also additional samples retained for future testing, said Britannia.
