Container ship spills oil off Vancouver, British Columbia

Container ship Europe (IMO 9285988) spilled 60 to 100 litres of fuel in Vancouver’s English Bay late last week. The Canadian Coast Guard was informed of the spill during the morning of Saturday January 21st. It deployed a boom to limit the spread of the oil.

A CCG spokesperson said on Sunday morning that “we anticipate the fuel has thinned and spread out overnight and we are working today to aggressively contain the slick and remove as much as possible from the marine environment.” The CCG later stated that the ship had released no more fuel. “We believe the situation will remain stable,” the spokesperson said.

The ship’s owner contracted the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) to respond to the incident, under the leadership of the Canadian Coast Guard.

As of January 22nd the vessel was at Vancouver anchorage.
