Collision between two grain carriers south of Istanbul

Cargo ship Haje Halimeh (IMO 8214889) collided with bulk carrier Asomatos (IMO 9289855) off the coast of Marmara Island, south of Istanbul, Turkiye, shortly after midnight local time on October 13th. The Haje Halimeh had been overtaking the Asomatos when the incident occurred. The ship’s starboard side bow ran into the port side stern of the bulk carrier. Both ships suffered significant damage.

The Haje Halimeh was en route from Izmail, Ukraine, to Valencia, Spain, with a cargo of wheat, while the Asomatos was reported as travelling from Kavkaz, Russia, to Haifa with a cargo of grain. (Other reports had the journey starting at Kerch.)

WK Webster said that the Haje Halimeh sustained structural damage to the port aft quarter while the Asomatos sustained denting and scratches to the starboard bow shell plating. Both vessels moved to anchor at Tekirdag anchorage pending inspections.

It is entered with Thomas Miller Specialty on behalf of Tristar Shipping Services LLC. As of October 14th the vessel was at Tekirdag Anchorage, Marmara Sea, Turkiye.

2003-built, Panama-flagged, 16,966 gt Asomatos is owned by Pansy Navigation Corp care of manager Royal Maritime Inc of Piraeus, Greece. It is entered with American Club on behalf of Pansy Navigation Corp. As of October 14th the vessel was at Tekirdag Anchorage, Marmara Sea, Turkiye.
