Chinese fishing trawler hijacked, quickly rescued by Nigerian Navy

Chinese fishing trawler Hailufeng 11, which is licensed to fish in Côte d’Ivoire, was boarded by pirates on Thursday May 14th in the Ivorian EEZ. There were 18 crew members aboard at the time – eight Chinese, seven Ivorian and three Ghanaian. The vessel was tracked and the Nigerian Navy intercepted it 140nm south of the Lagos Fairway Buoy, late on May 16th.

The pirates refused to stop when approached. The Nigerian Navy’s Special Boat Service, who were on the NNS Nguru, performed an opposed boarding while underway at 9 knots. All 18 hostages were rescued and 10 pirates were arrested, the Nigerian Navy said. The vessel was then escorted to Lagos.
