Bunker fuel spill at Port of Nanaimo, British Columbia

The Canadian Coast Guard on Wednesday was responding to a bunker fuel spill at the Port of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The Coast Guard said an unconfirmed amount of heavy fuel oil spilled during a fuel transfer operation involving bulk carrier Maipo River (IMO 9379935).

An Incident Command Post has been established to oversee the response.

The size of the spill was not revealed. The Port of Nanaimo is located in a natural harbour on the east coast of Vancouver Island, across the Strait of Georgia from the Port of Vancouver.

2009-built, Hong Kong-flagged, 20,987 gt Maipo River is owned by Newman Shipping BVI Ltd care of Pacific Basin Shipping (HK) Ltd of Hong Kong, China. IF Group site lists it as entered with NorthStandard (Standard Club) on behalf of Pacific Basin Shipping Ltd. However, it does not appear on the NorthStandard database.
