Brazilian authorities have added four more tankers as suspects in their investigation into the source of the oil spill that has affected 2,000 miles of its coastline over the past two months, according to a document released on November 6th by Delta Tankers Ltd. The authorities had initially named only one ship, Greek-flagged tanker Bouboulina, owned by Delta Tankers Ltd, as a suspect as the possible cause of the oil spill. Delta has denied responsibility and stated that the vessel arrived at her destination without losing any fuel or part of the cargo.
Delta Tankers said Wednesday that the Brazilian authorities had named four other tankers as suspects: VLCC Maran Apollo (IMO 9752993), VLCC Maran Libra (IMO 9593206), aframax Minerva Alexandra (IMO 9198094) and suezmax Cap Pembroke (IMO 9817119).
Brazil’s Navy did not comment on the information.
Reuters reported that, according to information in the vessels tracking system at Refinitiv’s Eikon terminal, both tankers had stopped in Venezuela and then passed near Brazil’s Northeast coast on their way to Asia in the last 180 days.
Minerva Alexandra apparently loaded oil at a port in the US Gulf before heading to Asia, also passing close to Brazil’s Northeast coast on its way south.
Cap Pembroke seemed to be operating only routes in the Americas during the past six months, between Canada and Brazil, with stops in the US Gulf.
