Correspondents in Chittagong have reported problems with unofficial surveyors attending ships, Britannia Club has told its members.
Often these surveyors would be working with local receivers and local agents in order to obtain contact details of ships due to arrive at Chittagong.
They would then target these ships with messages offering to carry out surveys at unusually low rates and introducing themselves as club-approved surveyors. They then often showed a supposed shortage in their survey report.
Britannia’s advice to members was to exercise caution when appointing a survey company and make sure that the surveyor was working on behalf of the Members rather than the receiver or consignee.
