Accident round-up : 9th January 2017

Containers on the upper deck in the first hold area of Yang Ming’s post-panamax boxship YM Utopia caught fire at around midday Beijing time on January 6th, while the vessel was anchored in the Yangshan deepwater Port area, Shanghai. As of 16.00 local time January 6th the vessel was on outer anchorage with at least one tug at her side. According to database YM Utopia is covered by Britannia P&I Club through registered owner Morning Star Ltd Corp.

Product tanker Atlantic Mate collided with a lock gate at Brunsbuettel while transiting the Kiel Canal in a southerly direction, at around noon January 7th, while en route from Klaipeda to Antwerp, carrying a cargo of naptha. The vessel suffered slight damage but no breach or leak was reported. The cause was apparently mechanical failure. The lock gate was damaged and inoperable. As of the evening of January 7th Atlantic Mate remained docked at Brunsbuettel, awaiting survey. Reefer container ship Sevilla Carrier struck tuna fishing vessel Hsiang Yung No 6 in the stern early on the morning of January 7th in the Philippines Sea, about 515nm east-south-east of the southern tip of Taiwan. The fishing vessel hull was breached and suffered water ingress, but there was no risk to the 10-man crew. It is understood that the Taiwanese Maritime Rescue will try to salvage the vessel. No details in P&I databases.

Ferry Blue Star Patmos suffered an entanglement of her anchor with the anchor of ferry Nisos Kalymnos at Kalymnos harbour, Kalymnos Island, late at night on January 6th. As a result Nisos Kalymnos allided with and caused damage to the ramp of ferry Olympios Zeus, which was docked alongside. Olympios Zeus was prevented from its scheduled sailing. Bulk carrier AP Revelin reportedly struck a catwalk at the UT Marine Science Institute, Texas, while leaving Corpus Christi port, on the night of January 5th. Apparently the vessel suffered a mechanical failure, dropped anchor to stop, but could not avoid a collision. The vessel was taken out to outer anchorage by tugs and brought to anchor, where it remained early on January 7th. Semi-submersible drilling rig Songa Encourage suffered water ingress in its pumproom while at the Heidrun-field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The leak was stopped and the platform was stabilized. Bad weather conditions and heavy seas were possibly the cause.

Los Angeles Harbour’s Angels Gate entrance reopened after the US Coast Guard discovered a helicopter wreckage, with two bodies on board. Several cruise ship passengers had reported seeing the helicopter fall into the sea. The victims were identified by US media as pilot Christopher Reed and photographer Michael Justice, who was on assignment for the Port of Los Angeles.
