Accident round-up: 5th October 2016

General cargo vessel Rix Star suffered engine failure during the evening of October 3rd in the Baltic Sea northwest of Baltiysk, Kaliningrad Region Rix Star was en route from Tallinn to Kaliningrad when it was caught in stormy weather and started to drift towards the Hel Peninsula in Polish waters. The crew asked for towage. As of mid-afternoon October 4th the convoy was sailing at about 5 knots in an easterly direction..

Luxury charter superyacht Masteka 2 lost steering its gear off New South Wales, Australia and suffered water ingress to the stern. The vessel was drifting 140nm off Port Macquarie with six crew on board. It was suffering an increasing list to starboard. The Australian Maritime Safety Agency ordered cruise ship Carnival Spirit to proceed to the scene. Carnival Spirit evacuated two non-essential crew members from the yacht using a rescue boat. Engineers from the cruise ship assisted the yacht’s crew in a salvage operation and stopped the water ingress. Masteka 2 was then stabilized, waiting for local authorities to dispatch a tug for towing to the nearest harbour.

Bulk carrier Star Zeta ran aground on the Parana river on the morning of October 4th while en route from San Lorenzo to Cape Town. No further details as yet. Vessel understood still to be aground, and loaded.
