Accident Round-up : 5th January 2017

A collision between container vessel Wan Hai 301 and container vessel APL Denver occurred off Pasir Gudang Port, Johor Malaysia at about 23.50 local time on January 3rd 2017. APL Denver reported that one of her bunker tanks sustained damage resulting in approximately 300t of oil spillage. Four anti-pollution craft are on-site and an oil boom has been placed around APL Denver to contain the oil spill. In Singapore some oil patches were seen and the spillage has been contained off the western side of Pulau Ubin. Eight anti-pollution craft with dispersant-spraying capabilities have been activated. There have been no reports of injuries and traffic in the East Johor Straits and Singapore’s port operations remain unaffected.

Mega container ship MSC Clorinda ran aground at around 06.20 local time on January 4th at the 145km mark on the Suez Canal, while transiting in a northerly direction. The vessel was apparently refloated some four hours later and then resumed sailing. However, as of 15.30 LT It appeared to be lying dead in water, with at least three tugs at her side, near the shore. Reports said that it was probably waiting for all the vessels in the northbound convoy to pass by before resuming its journey from Singapore to Izmit. Container carrier Ocean Kingdom was attacked by pirates shortly after leaving Zamboanga port in Philippines. About 25nm from Sibago Island the vessel was

approached by two speedboats with heavily armed men on board. The crew raised the alarm. Two patrol boats were despatched, arriving just in time to prevent the pirates boarding the container carrier. There was an exchange of fire between the pirates and Coast Guard officers, after which the attackers fled and Ocean Kingdom returned to Zamboanga port. No crew were harmed, but it is unknown if there were any casualties on either side during the firefight between the pirates and the officers of the Coast Guard. Ocean Kingdom is 8,450dwt and 7,541grt. The owner and operator of the vessel is Germany-based Buss Reederei.

Small 420dwt general cargo vessel Euro Uno, loaded with food goods, was pushed aground by storm on Misamis Beach, northern Mindanao, Philippines, while approaching Plaridel port on December 31st. As of January 3rd the vessel was apparently still aground. with no salvage in prospect. No details of vessel in P&I databases.

General cargo vessel Guneyin dragged anchor on December 31st and drifted ashore north of Tuzla, Turkey, Marmara Sea, in rough weather conditions. General cargo vessel Yakup Aga also dragged anchor and drifted ashore. Both vessels were refloated with the help of tugs; Guneyin was brought to anchor, while Yakup Aga was taken to Kartal. No details of vessels in P&I databases.
