Accident round-up : 3rd November 2016

Container ship Maersk Patras caught fire 90nm east-south-east of the Canary Islands. during a voyage from Algeciras, Spain to Conakry, Guinea. The fire began in the engine room, The crew closed the compartment and activated the CO2 firefighting system, which extinguished the fire, but there had been damage to the generators and propulsion system. Maersk Patras requested assistance and a salvage tug towed the ship to Las Palmas for repair and inspection. No details of vessel cover found in P&I Club databases. The vessel is 37,842 DWT and 31,333 GRT.

A Korean coastal trawler sank after collision with car carrier Trans Future 1 in the Yellow Sea, some eight nautical miles off Sinjin, South Korea. The car carrier was en route from from Hakata, Japan to Pyeongtaek. The duty officer saw the fishing trawler too late to avoid collision. The eight fishermen jumped into the sea and were rescued. Trans Future 1 was detained and will return to operations after the completion of an investigation. Trans Future 1 is 9,287 DWT, 25,667 GRT. Trans Future 1 is apparently covered with Japan P&I through Member Feng Li Maritime Corp.

A coastal passenger wooden boat sank in the Malacca Strait near Batam, Indonesia. The vessel was carrying nearly 100 illegal workers and four crew. It was sailing from Johor, Malaysia, to Batam in bad weather, capsizing after hitting a reef.

Nearby fishermen succeeded in rescuing 39 people, while 18 were found dead and another 39 are still missing. After more than 10 hours of SAR, none of the missing passengers was found. Bulk carrier Gadwall was disabled due to unspecified problems on October 29th in Gulf of St. Lawrence, en route from Quebec Canada to Ghent Belgium. Gadwall was taken on tow by tug Ocean Arctique on November 1st, to be towed to Sept-Iles. Gadwall apparently covered with Steamship Mutual via Member Gadwall Shipping Inc.

Fire erupted on board fish factory Verano when docked in Cape Town on November 2nd.vIt is understood some 800,000 Styrofoam containers are in the fire area. The vessel has about 100 tons of fuel on board The five crew on board have been evacuated. No details of vessel cover found in P&I Club databases.
