ABS Releases New Guide for LNG Bunkering

Classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has released a guide for LNG bunkering, which outlines requirements for the design, construction, and survey of carriers and barges fitted with dedicated LNG transfer arrangements and intended for regular LNG bunkering service.

“Most LNG-fuelled vessels in operation at the time of issuance of this Guide receive LNG bunkers on a relatively small scale, typically through a shore-to-ship basis by road tankers or dedicated shore side LNG tanks,” said ABS.

ABS said that more dedicated LNG infrastructure is needed, particularly in terms of small scale LNG storage and distribution centres.

“It is envisaged that greater LNG transfer rates than those typically used for refuelling the current gas fuelled ship fleet will be required and this will necessitate the deployment of new and additional bunkering equipment and operational practices,” ABS said. http://ww2.eagle.org/content/eagle/en.html
