The Seafarers’ International Union of Canada, which represents 15,000 Canadian marine workers, has demanded that the Canadian government produce a plan to vaccinate seafarers after there was a Covid-19 outbreak on cargo ship Atlantic Huron (IMO 8025680) which remained anchored in the St. Lawrence River (IMN April 19th 2021)

The vessel was delivering iron ore to Quebec City when some of the crew became unwell. On April 1st the crew on the ship tested negative, but by the middle of the month a total of 18 of the 25 crew on board had tested positive for Covid-19.

The ship reversed course and anchored in Thunder Bay harbour where nurses came out on a tug to test the crew for Covid-`9. Three of the crew have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
