Marine round-up : 9th May 2024

On May 8th cargo ship Bremen (IMO 9617301) was reported grounded at the port of Silloth-on-Solway, north-west England. The incident occurred at 00:10 local time when the vessel was arriving at port. Efforts were underway to rescue the distressed vessel and minimize the potential risk caused by the grounding.

2012-built, Cyprus-flagged, 2,589 gt Bremen is owned by Bremen Herman Lohmann care of manager Hermann Lohman Bereederungen GmbH of Haren (Ems), Germany. It is entered with Thomas Miller Specialty (Hamburg policy). As of May 8th it was reported as Moored at Silloth.

The US military said on Friday that it was pausing the offshore construction of a maritime pier on the coast of Gaza because of weather conditions. It said that it would instead continue building it at the Israeli port of Ashdod. Once completed the pier will be placed off the coast of Gaza. “Forecasted high winds and high sea swells caused unsafe conditions for soldiers working on the surface of the partially constructed pier,” the US military said, adding that “the partially built pier and military vessels involved in its construction have moved to the Port of Ashdod, where assembly will continue”. Earlier last week the US had said that about 50% of the pier had been constructed.

The Philippines Bureau of Customs was reported to have issued a warrant of seizure and detention (WSD) on May 3rd for bulk carrier Ohshu Maru (IMO 9568237), which it said had been drifting and loitering in the Bohol Sea since April 22nd, en route to the port of Kinuura. The warrant was issued because the captain did not give a notice of arrival when the vessel started drifting. The Ohshu Maru was claimed by the Philippine authorities to have turned off its AIS transmission in Malaysia for 32 hours before entering Philippine waters.

2011-built, Liberia-flagged, 50,927 gt Ohshu Maru is owned by Seno Kisen / Erica Navigation care of ISM manager Toto Sangyo Co Ltd of Imabari, Japan. Ship manager is Seno Kisen KK of Imabari, Japan. It is entered with Japan Club (Imabari office) on behalf of Erica Navigation SA. As of May 8th it was listed as Not Under Command off the Japanese port of Kinuura.

Salvage teams in the Baltimore channel have located the sixth victim of the Baltimore bridge collapse. Maryland State Police investigators, the Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the FBI responded to the report from the salvage team and recovered the body of a sixth construction worker, named as local man José Mynor López, 37. Eight road crew workers were on break from repairing potholes when the bridge was struck. Two workers were rescued. In the weeks since the bodies of the other six have gradually been found.
