Container ship MSC Silvana VIII (IMO 9309459) has sunk near Daishan, Zhoushan, China after it suffered progressive flooding following a grounding days after departing a ship repair yard on July 11th (see yesterday’s IMN). The 8,401 teu vessel sunk after multiple attempts to refloat the vessel were unsuccessful. The vessel had arrived at the Zhoushan ship repair yard on June 22nd after leaving Gwangyang after two days’ stay, South Korea. It remained at the facility for 19 days before departing on July 11th. The precise cause, timing and circumstances of the casualty have not yet been officially confirmed. However, the vessel was reported to have encountered complications while leaving the repair berth. It was then driven aground during the harsh weather associated with Typhoon Bavi, causing it to develop an initial list and take on water. Things got worse from there. Several attempts were made to refloat the vessel. It was initially pulled free by tugs but, bad weather caused it to ground a second time at a different location. The vessel continued to take on water and by early August key areas including the stern, engine room and several cargo holds were flooded. By August 6th the vessel’s large section of the hull was submerged. Around 3,000 tonnes of fuel had been removed to improve the chances of another refloating attempt. However, Typhoon Dolphin has lashed into China, making landfall near Zhoushan, Zhejiang and Fuding. 2006-built, Cyprus-flagged, 94,489 gt MSC Silvana VIII is owned by Proviso Corp care of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co of Geneva, Switzerland. ISM manager is MSC Shipmanagement Ltd of Limassol, Cyprus.
