Maryland estimates bridge replacement cost at up to $1.9bn

The State of Maryland has estimated that it will cost $1.7bn to $1.9bn to rebuild the collapsed Francis Scott Key Baltimore Bridge, which it anticipated completing by the end of Q3 2028.

The Maryland Department of Transportation said that the estimate was “in line with similar projects of this scale and complexity”.

Lawmakers in the Federal Congress are working on legislation that would waive the current requirement that the state pay 10% of the rebuilding costs, as well as ensuring that there is enough money in a federal rebuilding fund. Maryland said it would request by the end of May proposals to rebuild the bridge.

Last week the US Department of Transportation provided an initial $60m in emergency funds. This will help pay to clear debris and start the process of rebuilding the bridge.

Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland noted that “any funds recovered from lawsuits for wrongdoing will be recouped by federal taxpayers”.
